If someone is thinking, "I should be staff before insert random name here, then honestly, I think that person should re-examine how they feel about it, and why they are thinking that way. As a young person, it is easy to crave things for the wrong reasons.

If you represent meeting an invaluable need to this place, then likely, it will be offered to you. But as the saying goes, "Too many cooks spoil the broth".

For anyone who aspires to be considered staff here, I suggest this litmus test:

Assume that someone you don't know well, is suddenly appointed as staff.
Now examine, inwardly, how that makes you feel.

Any of following feelings: wronged, angry, insulted, a sense of unfairness ...to me would all indicate that you want to be staff for the wrong reasons, and should immediately cease in pursuing it.

If this does not apply to you, my apologies...

But as someone who has had to hire people in my lifetime, I can say a manager mihgt have a list of people in mind for a job where there's a lot of turnover, but in that case only.

In all other cases, it is a case of examining the needs, and seeing which of the available options (candidates) makes the best fit with those needs, irrespective of all other details.

I'll add an anecdote:

I was once the 'Supervisor' of Tech Support for a small ISP, and was informed, in short order... that we had to immediately lay off everyone in my department, except for four people -- one for every shift. And I was told to keep my 'best four'.

Subsequently, one of the two brothers who owned the firm, made a personal pitch to me for one of the employees, saying "family takes care of it's own".

But the person he wanted, was never a very good support person, and continually needed help from people whose time was valuable. He would have been one of the first I'd chosen to lay off, rather than one of the last. And despite that owner's request, I did what was best for the company, and kept the 4 best.
