Idea: Allow more messages
#1
Hello @Sora / @retslac,

please increase the number of private messages a user is allowed to have.  Blush

What is the current limit, 100? I think is waaaaaaaaay too low plus it does not make much sense to restrict it to a small number: it's just text, most of the message probably being system messages barely having a significant size. I have tried to do some calculations but it 's not that easy, because I lack of information: I do not know how many of the user accounts do net get (circa) 0 messages at all... But I guess a lot of the ~25000 accounts that exists right now. Well I guess the easiest way would be to just take a look at the database table and its size. I guess it's not that much, just some megabytes. Ok maybe more than 10. But less than 100! So I think it should be possible to increase the limit without making the database go boom.

Could you increase the number to 200 at least? Smile

I do not want to delete messages from other users (and I cannot archive them, right?). Shy

I don’t know, but I think 1,000 sounds realistic ( = total number of messages received- ofc my current number of messages in my inbox is lesser). More than 90% of them being messages automatically created by the system. So I delete messages very often.

I don't know how I missed this thread.... lol. But I have run into this issue in the past, and I successfully offloaded the messages to a place (Google) that doesn't care how much disk you use, because they have essentially an infinite amount. (lol)

It's not based on the # of messages -- it's a fixed amount of space, which I don't recall now.

I don't see Sora changing this, ever. It's just that the software used is old, and no doubt he's trying tio use a VM with as minimal disk as is necessary. He no doubt wants most of the available disk to be for public messages, which everyone can read, rather than private ones. Smile

I don't remember how I did it now (exporting the data). And I know the product is a bit messy. But it works.

In 2016, I met the person who is now my BFF here, and our back-and-forth messages quickly filled the space. LOL

Try it?? If you get stuck, let me know... I'm sure I can figure it out again. Big Grin

I'm not sure why you mentioned this?

You can get that much space from Google free. I've seen people even use multiple accts, and some kind of algorithm that allows the individual accts space to be combined.

But that would not be open legitimately to a business or organization.

$12USD/yr for 10GB starts to add up quickly. I figure he might have been able to carve HD space from the Agma server VMs for the Forums, and just pay for it as a part of his existing package, which is likely the most cost-efficient way. Smile

Mentioned it because if the reason we cannot have more messages is the cost of disk space, I'd be a bit confused, since disk space is so cheap....
(It did not post it as a concrete suggestion, just as an example for cheap storage.)

In which way?
