Official Forum Rules! [READ before posting!]

So after doing some further research about what went on in the shoutbox earlier today it seems to be the participants in this conversion were all breaking the rules.

Here are the few I saw.
1. Sexist phrases. As I read in the chat and as ~snipped~ said in the previous post someone said something along the lines of "go make a sandwich in the kitchen." This is extremely sexist and to me is shouldn't be toleranted in the chat at all.

2. Disrespect. As I kept reading I noticed that the participants in the argument were being extremely disrespectful to each other. In terms of punishments I think that this should go as a warning unless this disrespect keeps on going.

Last but not least. So, I kept on following the mile long argument in the shoutbox box untill I found the meat of the conversation, it was simply a matter of miscounting in the Battle of the Sexes game. What would've been better would have be to each accept your mistakes, fix them, apologize if needed, and continue a nice friendly game.

This is all I have to see if I can help anyone out. Also, I'm extremely sorry if this came across as Mini-Moderating. I didn't intend on it being that way I just want to help the community out.

I hardly ever read the ShoutBox. And if there were something like that, I'd say nothing there, and, at most, PM the participants to try to get them to stop.

You know... Maybe "ShoutBox" isn't a bad name. If there's drama on here, its almost always taking place in the ShoutBox. And when is 'shouting' a good thing?

I'm intrigued to know who was involved... except I can remember once delving into the history/'archgives', and how I was grinding my teeth before I was done. So instead, it seems like an excellent time to be lazy, and quash the intrigue instead.

Hopefully, everyone made up, afterwards.

I know who you mean. I think we all do. I'd do something against him, if it would make a difference. He / She is going to make another account, won't even hide it's still him / her, and nobody will care. "He didn't do anything wrong". "Give him another chance". It always has been like that, not even specific to this member.

First, you (the moderator) gets a ton of request (like this one), and thats completely fine, and probably even wanted. Then action is taken. He / She comes back, and everybody welcomes him / her again. And then I'm the drama bitch for being annoyed. What am I here for (as a moderator) if it's not gonna make a difference?

Sometimes I really feel like the only one even moderating.
Moderating is not a job just for banning spammers. You will have to take action, even if you get a negative rep. Or two Wink

Hey @Mikasa

Thank you so much for letting us know the rules and regulations of the community. I have question that, is it okay if we do a little bit Drama because sometimes it for fun and it makes AGF active. Let me know..

Thanks.

In order for that to work, everyone has to be a decent person first, and a teasing combatant second!

I think it would be amazing if that were possible!

But that said, I'm not sure that I have yet seen it?

Show me any GAME, and I will show you CONFLICT gone wrong. That is, two people who you know are friends, getting bent out of shape over something small and trivial. (Or a 3rd person who doesn't know the two are friends jumping in and supporting one or the other, lol.)

I say we all give @Voakie a bottle of something strong, because as I said elsewhere, being a moderator truly is a thankless job (key word 'JOB'), and what he said (that from his perspective, he gets cr@pped on a lot, and then everything changes back, as if NOTHING HAPPENED, except from his perspectyive, he's still the 'bad guy'.)

Not so. I'd put him on a pedestal for doing a great job!

In the end, everyone hates the referee, and yet agrees, without the referee, there can BE NO GAME!

(Think about that, to try and gain the perspective? And be nice to him, lest he throw in the towel!)

For squirrel i'm sorry but if there is no referee there actually can be a game. Im a softball player and when I was young, there were no umpires so the coaches would be the umpires/referees even though it was fair (still isn't even with umpires) there can be games without referees....

True... it is possible to play a game, in a social setting, without need for a referee.

I did the same thing -- hung out with a co-ed crowd, and we all got together every week and played ball. There was never an umpire...

(Although, we did have a few guys who were playing too seriously, and they would take exception to things, and occasionally ruin the camaraderie of the game. But that was how they were wired...)

So in a way, it wasn't a perfect analogy for the role of "Moderating" -- on a forum, that really is a necessary thing, because unlike a social thing, where you can say things, come to regret them, then make up, and a week later neither remembers what happened... with forums, you leave a permanent trail.

You post what you were thinking at the time, and if you're hurtful, that can leave a lasting effect, and be reread later. And for a moderator, it's a bit of an impossible job, because on the one hand, you want to keep everyone "civil", but on the other, you want to protect their freedom to express themselves... "freedom of speech" just as importantly.

You have the right to express your emotions and opinions, wether they are negative or positive. But if by doing so, you are being hurtful to someone else, then you are infringing upon the rights of that person to feel safe. Or if you prefer, if your freedom impedes on the rights of others, then your freedom isn't any better than a dictatorship.

True, it is nuanced. There is a line to be drawn and it's not always obvious. But I think that while that line can be blurry at times, it should be easy to identify the extremes of a situation and take proper action. I believe that moderators on many forums are a bit too lenient and could do with some bit less of tolerance. But at other times, they can be unforgiving and cold hearted.

There's no middleground anymore. Mods are either too soft or too harsh. Call me a fool or a dreamer, but I think that the best course of action in any kind of rule infringing a mod may face is to give 3 chances to the rule breaker to redeem himself, no more, no less. Also, the consequences should be progressively bigger instead of assigning a value to an offence.

A good example of what I mean would be as such:

First violation = 1 warning
The person is warned and should have realised that he shouldn't do it again if he doesn't want further actions to be taken against him.

Second violation = Temporary ban of one month
The person has persisted and has received the time of a whole month to reflect on his actions and reform his ways.
If he is caught bypassing the ban, extend the ban to one year and block his ip.

Third violation = Temporary ban of one year
The person has shown that he's not mature enough to be on the forum atm. This one year ban is a sort of last chance to make said person grow up. If he is caught bypassing the ban, extend the ban indefinetely and block his ip.

After which, if he hasn't learned yet, the person would be banned forever. They actually still do it on some really old forums. But hey, call me a nostalgic, call me whatever you like, there's a reason why those old forums are still around...
